Course details
Communicating and listening to children and capturing their voice is central to effective safeguarding practice. It is how we understand children’s lived experiences, hear their views about their lives and circumstances and take effective action to support or safeguard them.
Article 12 of the UNCRC establishes a child’s right to:-
‘be listened to and taken seriously when decisions are made affecting them’
This short course is aimed at people who are working or volunteering with children, young people, and their families, or likely to come into contact with children, parents, or carers as part of their role and aims to build confidence in:-
- understanding the importance of communication in practice - building connections and relationships with children
- ensuring we give children a space, a place and a voice - or supporting and advocating on their behalf (and with their consent)
- exploring the best ways to use children’s natural expression - both creatively (to support them) and effectively (to understand how they see their life and experiences)
- consideration of how we accurately and empathically record the child's view in professional records
- Understand of when communication is not-so-good especially where children have additional communication support needs
- Consider barriers to communication and how they can be overcome
